My name is Mark Alan Anderson and I live in the suburbs of East Denver. I'm a full time tile setter and bricklayer for 32 years and also a native of Denver for 57 years now. I have 3 children, Tyler, Farrah and Ryan. Through them I also have 3 beautiful granddaughters. I became a "draft" star in 1969. In the 70's, 80's and all thru the 90's, I played music in various Rock and Roll bands. 4 or those years full time traveling on the road seeing a few of the states and a little bit of Canada. I apprenticed with 3 bricklayers in the mid 60's for 2 years as a hod carrier and eventually learned the art of laying the brick as well. I then apprenticed with a tile setter that worked as a drummer in the band I was playing in at the time. My apprenticeship took 2 years. I went on the road at that time and after 4 years living in miserable motels, partying and indulging in recreational faux relationships and playing Rock and Roll decided it was time to actually try and make some money. I started setting tile full time and playing music full time as well. Countless years passed. I've always had a passion for guns, knives (especially switchblades) and things that flash and go boom, motorcycles and vintage cars and trucks. I bought a waggery "beater" picklock at a gun show in the early 70's, took it apart and attempted to fix it. I began my collection and have collected ever since. I became a member of a auction site called "Blade Auction" some 10 years ago. I learned how to "pimp" Italian stilettos and began listing them on the auction site and selling them and was hooked from that point on. I've spent the last ten years studying and learning the fine art of knife building and continue to learn daily. I have hopes and dreams to go full time one day soon and get "off my knees"...I've re-invested every penny back into the tooling and equipment I currently have which by todays standards is very modest and basic. A lot of my bigger equipment was purchased as old "once upon a time" quality gear and I took each and every one of those apart, cleaned and re-furbished. I now spend almost every spare minute in my shop working and building the little devils. I machine, carve, grind, heat treat, polish, color, etch and build every part with exception of the Damascus I use. I buy my Damascus from only the best makers in the field, Joel Davis, Robert Eggerling, Mike Norris, Devin Thomas, Delbert Ealy, Doug Pensio, Chad Nicholes and Chris Marks to name the majority of them and admire their individual skills. I'd love to forge my own eventually but for lack of room........ I remember surfing the web looking for knives to buy and couldn't believe what Arlin "SloJoe" Walker was doing with stilettos...I spent countless hours browsing his site... I then found Paul Panak (Burn) a guy that called himself "Nemo" (who was a wealth of information) and became friends with Dave Wattenburg from "Protech Knives". That was the beginning. Goals? Just to keep getting better at the craft and make quality pieces that I'd like to think will be heirloom in quality and passed down generation to generation. I know my kids will end up with mine and will probably wonder "what are we suppose to do with all these?! My special thanks to my very close friend and inspiration Arlin Walker who also developed and maintains my web site. Also thanks to David Winston, Paul Panak, Jonny Stout, Owen Wood and Joel Davis and Chad Nicholes for extending their friendship. All top notch at what they do. Mark Alan Anderson Aka Malan |
